From information I have available, I understand that there are three Tarbert Castles - one in Dunbarton(NS 209483), on in Argyll (NR 867687) and one in Ayrshire (map ref. unknown). Please could anyone assist with the map reference of the one in Ayrshire, if it indeed, really exist (or existed) of course. Many thanks ------------------ The broken stones, the ruined walls, 'Tis few who know where hist'ry falls.

Tarbert Castle is in Argyll, Tarbet Castle was on Loch Lomond, and your Ayshire tarbet castle of the 15thc was located at NS 209483, though the location is approximate, since nought remains to determine exact location. Incidently, there is a 4th, Tarbat House, at NH 782746. This is a classical mansion, which replaced an early 17thc house, which stood on the site of a castle. ------------------ Demeure par la verite Visit my web-site at www.castlesontheweb.com/members/wurdsmiff/castles.htm Gordon.

Thanks wurdsmiff - I should have guessed that you would be the first to respond, living in that part of the world. However, if the Ayrshire one is located at NS 209483 (approx), where have I gone wrong with the other two ?------------------ The broken stones, the ruined walls, 'Tis few who know where hist'ry falls.

Your Grid ref for Argyll is correct, on rechecking, that for Dunbarton (Loch lomond) is erroneous. It should be NN 329055, at Tarbet Isle. Another MacPherson house stood at Claddach, NN 323048, though is less likely to have been fortified. Your original reference may be my fault as it appears on my web site and in the book. This may be due to translocation of GR's, rather than the sites! Apologies for this (amid much embarassment). I shall correct it. ------------------ Demeure par la verite Visit my web-site at www.castlesontheweb.com/members/wurdsmiff/castles.htm Gordon.
