The Roman's did not build castles. There is the remains of a Roman legionary fortress (and associated town) at Chester, beyond the scope of my interest. There are also remains of a Medieval Castle. If your interested in the medieval castle post again and I'll give you what infomation I have. For the Roman site try a search of Deva.

This was once an important walled town with a castle, but only the walls and Agricola’s Tower remain. It was a Roman site, strengthened by the Saxons and Normans, who built the motte and bailey. The large buttressed tower was built in the 12th century. Henry III annexed Chester as a royal castle and from the time of the Black Prince, the eldest son of the sovereign has been Earl of Chester. Eleanor, Duchess of Gloucester, was a prisoner in the castle in 1477. In the 19th century the gateway, military quarters and assize courts were built. The Regimental Museum is in Agricola’s Tower today, and inside are relics of Omdurman and the Ashanti Wars, and part of a zeppelin.

Tiger,
seeing that Chester|Deva is only just over the border in England. Let me know just what you want and I'll tell you. There are more remains of the Roman period than mentioned. There are exhibitions in the towers Andrew, the main military museum is next to the old Law Courts.

Ciao Peter
