Normans were the blokes from Normandy in France who invaded Britain in 1066, led by William the Conqueror. Our guy, Harold was supposed to have been killed with an arrow in his eye. Nasty. The Normans built motte and bailey castles. The motte was a mound where a defensive wooden tower was built and the enclosure round it was the bailey.
