Hi, folks,
As part of my ongoing project to research the Norman castles of Lancashire, I am now in the process of gathering as much information as I can about Clitheroe castle, Clitheroe. Located approximately 18 miles NE of Preston , Clitheroe stands as a fine example of a Norman stone keep castle (I have posted a few images in my "Castles of Lancashire" album in the archive photo gallery). It was constructed in 1186 by local Lord, Robert de Lacy, to defend his administrative centre. I would be extremely interested to hear from anyone who has any additional information about Clitheroe castle, as aside from the most general historical details, I have found little documentation describing the castle in any real depth. Therefore, any new background information would be much appreciated! Thank you.

Devine,
Do you have any of the Mike Salter booklets?
If not I'd give him a call on;
01684 565211.
His forementioned booklet on Lancashire & Cheshire does have some good information.
I'm also sure I saw some more information somewhere.
Andrew ... was there something in one of C.S.G Bulletins?
Blasted sure I saw something somewhere!
Will check out for you.
Peter

Hi, Peter,
Thanks for that. Though I've heard a great deal about Mike Salter's texts, I haven't actually got a copy, so I'll definitely look into that one. If you come across anything else relating to Clitheroe (or any other Lancashire castles) that might be of interest to me, please let me know as it's always appreciated. Thank you.

You need to have a look at the current Castle Studies Group Journal (N0. 19). In there is an excellent paper on Clitheroe castle by Paul Adams and a good bibliography.

I think Paul was involved in the recent excavations and consolidation of the site. The above paper covers many new ideas on Clitheroe as well as a review of its history.

I think I read somewhere that they have secured a lottery grant to improve the presentation of the site to visitors. They don't do a bad job now on what are no doubt limited funds but there isn't a guide book to the castle in print and the on-site museum could do with a refresh.

Regards

Peter

Here's my full bibliography, hope this helps. One point - Best's guidebook (1990) is fine for the historical account but his architectural description contains a few errors/misinterpretations. At the end of the day there's no better way to understand a monument than going out & taking a good long look at it ;-)
