Could you give me an idea of what a wealthy Norman baron (England or Normandy) would have sat in at his highboard?

I confess I have to guess and can't proof anything: As most furniture was made of wood, almost nothing from such early times as the 11th century survived until today. The Normans of that time were Vikings that had settled for one and a half century in the western part of the carolingian/capetingian kingdom of France, and their style in architecture, furniture, clothing etc. was therefore a mixture of scandinavian and carolingian influences. In both of those cultures, the carving of animals and ornaments with plants was an important element and can be seen in things made of wood (such as ship-heads or boxes) or of stone (rune-stones, pillars in carolingian churches or palaces). It is most likely that rich ornaments were also used on furniture.
