how did castles stay warm, or did they, because i read it was warmer to stay in a small house than a castle

Castles were heated the same way small houses were in medieval times, with an open fire. The fire may have been lit in the centre of the room or in a fireplace in the wall, depending on time period.
The difference is that castles were larger and had very thick walls(thermal mass), so it took much more to heat a castle than a small house.

In smaller castles there was also the option to place the living quarters directly over the stables to use the warmer air coming from the animals, which is also a common system at many old farmhouses. Not every room in a castle had a fireplace - often this was only the kitchen and the hall.
