Would nobility/royalty be buried within castle walls or just in the chapel or somewhere else? What about war dead? I'd be much obliged...

Once more, I can only tell you about the situation in the holy roman empire. Most families of the higher nobilty and the royalty had a special church were they buried the dead of their families. In most cases, that church was not inside a castle. For a king or emperor, it had to be one of the most important churches available. The kings of the Salian Dynasty (11th-12th century) and some of the later german kings were buried at the dome of Speyer. Even if a king died in a battle, he was brought there afterwards.
Other nobels had built special chapels or churches in a town or an abbey to bury their dead family-members.

Here you can have a look at the plate on top of the grave of King Rudolf I. of Habsburg (†1291). Its also in Speyer: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolf_I._(HRR)
