I need to know exactly why castles were built for a school project. Can anyone help? |

School projects seem often to expect simple answers to complex questions. Your question is complicated since castles were built for many hundreds of years in many different countries for many different reasons. Indeed some people are still building castles. However there are generally two reasons for building a castle. 1. Defence - a large castle like Dover castle was built to defend the country against invading armies. A small castle like Stokesay castle in Shropshire England was built to defend against bands of robbers. 2. Status - Castles were built by the wealthy to show that they were important. Of course many castles were built for both these reasons. Since there is no easy answer to this queston I suggest you look at some other web sites for more information http://www.nationalgeographic.com/features/97/castles/enter.html is very good. But try some other sites too. |
