I presume you mean the medieval seige engine and not the hand held device used by anglers to cast bait (or by my dad to scare the local cats out of his garden)

There were serveral types of medieval seige engine of which the mangonel was one. See the essay at http://www.castlewales.com/siege.html part of Jeff Thomas's excellent Castles of Wales Web site. Have a look around the rest of the site as it is very interesting and may well answer many of your other question.
