I need help! I have a project due and I have to find out all the information I can on architects in the Medievial Ages...That means tools, their ways of building castles and anything else useful. Please help!! thank you |

Philip has provided several links on castle construction at http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum9/HTML/000057.html All the reading I have done on this subject indicates that the mason's were not only responsible for the construction of castles and other buildings, but also for the design. There is a splendid little book from the Medieval Craftsmen series entitled 'Masons and Sculptors' which would be perfect for your project.It is published by the British Museums Press, 1991, ISBN 0-7141-2048-0 and is written by Nicola Coldstream. If this is not available in your area, try researching masons rather than architects it will be more fruitful. I agree with wurdsmiff that for stone castles the architect was almost always the master mason. The the most famous in British castle building was Master James of St George. (This would be a good name to research). In the early years of castle building, when castles were built of earth and wood it was part of a lords military expertise to be able to build and design a castle, much as he was expected to be able to ride and fight with his sword.
