I am 12 years old and would like to know the following for my school project:
When and what type was the earliest and the latest castles to be built in the UK?

Who built these castles eg Normans etc?

What is the most common type of castle ever built in the UK?

Any information would be appreciated urgently.

Of course the answer to these questions are never as simple as them seem. If by castle you mean the private fortified residence of a fuedal lord, then the first castle in the Uk where probably built by Norman lords invited to settle in England by Edward the Confessor. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records one built in Herefordshire in 1051. Certainly the Norman invaders of England, under William the First built many castle following the invasion of 1066.

Most of these early castle, and most castles fro the next 150 years were actually small castles of timber and earth either of the motte and bailey type or ringworks (see http://www.castlewales.com/motte.html ) These were fairly simple to build and really very military and were common where there was fighting, ie in Wales and it borders with England and during the time of civil war during the reign of King Stephen (mid 11th Century) all over (Indeed King Henry II is meant to have had 1100 castle destroyed after this civil war, and virtually all of these would have been earthwork and timber castles).

Castles survived much longer in Scotland and Ireland and the last castles in the Uk come from there. I hope some else will fill you in on these castles. However you might also like to look at the discussion we had some time ago at http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum12/HTML/000134.html

Finally remember that in such projects it's not so much getting the answer right as in presenting your answer in an interesting and informative way that counts.

Please come back to the forum if you want some clarification with any points.
