I'm a bit bemused by these questions. Castles are a reflection of feudal society and questions about society in large are general dealt with by historians in terms of the effects of feudal society.

Positive and negative effects of castles very much depends on point of view. A knight compelled to do guard duty might consider it a negative chore or a positive contribution to ensuring peace. I'd only be able to answer this question myself it was phrased in relation to something else.

To be honest to give a good answer you need a good book probably one on feudalism rather than castles. Since few website really have much depth of content I find it hard to recommend one but look at http://orb.rhodes.edu/ which has high standards and accurate content, though you'll have to search for what you're looking for.
My quick look turn up this lecture note http://orb.rhodes.edu/textbooks/Muhlberger/econ_to_1300.html which does not talk about castles at all, but if you remember that a castle was a lords residence and symbol of his power it should go a little way to answering your question.

One aspect of castles to consider is the effect on towns. We known from the Domesday Book that many houses in existing Saxon towns (like Exeter and Lincoln) were destroyed to make way for castles. However, by the 12C that many castles were being built with new towns attached to them (Pleshey in Essex is an example).
