Hello! My name is Shannon and I am 10 turning 11 in April. All I want to know is what is an average size of a castle in the Medieval times and what sites should I go to look at to do with the rules and punishments and maybe settlements? THANKYOU From Shannon |

Sorry to take a while to answer this. Firstly castle really do vary in size from a tower house little more than 5 meter square to vast places like Dover which is 750m by 450m. But there really is no such thing as an average castle since all castles are affected by where they are sited, when they were built, how they have been changed and used and various other things which makes every one unique. Now I looked for a good hour for sites on medieval punishment and could only come up with detailed reports on Magna Carta which I don't think you would find very interesting. Nothing really for young people. This is a great shame because it's a very interesting subject but I'm afraid you'll have to look at books. See if you can get to your local library and ask a librian to find a good book for you. ------------------ Visit Castellarium Philippis |

'Old Time Punishments' William Andrews F.R.H.S The Tabard Press 1970. Is a horrible little book, which I did pick up from my local library in a clear out. You may still find a library having it in stock. Hm! A quick look at the frontpiece shows it was first published in 1890. Nasty !!!! |

There is also a rather graphic depiction of the traitors punishment in the film Braveheart, but I'm afraid if you were my 10 year old I wouldn't let you watch it. Let's just say in the 14th century it was a public entertainment fit for everyone now it gets a 15 film certificate.  |
