Castle vary widely in design, from the ornate french chateuax to the much more practical and defensive simple keeps of Scotland in the 14th century. Really there is so much that one could say that you could write an encyclopedia about it. The best way for you to see the differences is to visit different websites and study them yourself. Start with the link to castle collections at the foot of the page and have a browse through them, then study something on castle history. The Castles of Britain Learning centre is a good place to begin , http://www.castles-of-britain.com/castle6.htm

Good question Princess,
You would probably get varying answers to such a question.
As Gordon said, castles varied widely, but what often makes it even more difficult to classify a castle is that they were often built in stages over hundreds of years and by different people, giving them a mix of characteristics.
Some points to consider.
-Does it have a keep? Some do, some don't.
-Is the outer perimeter composed of walls or buildings?
-Is there a coutyard within the castle, or is composed of a tight cluster of buildings?
-Is it on a hill, in a swamp etc?
-Does it have a moat?
-How many sets of walls(defences) does it have?
-Is it symmetrical?
-Are the walls lower or same height as the towers?
-Does it have lots of large windows and very ornate design on the exterior, then it's probably not a real castle but a palace.

That's about all I can come up with.
The importance you assign to each of these(and other)characteristics will determine the type of classification you come up with.

Erik
