I had wanted to build a motte and bailey style castle for my school project. I am very confused though about where the bailey is supposed to be placed. I understand that motte means that it is built up on a mound. I thought that the bailey was an area inside the walls, but now am confused as I also read that a bailed is built adjacent to the motte and has its own moat. I dont know which is correct. HELP!

To get an idea, look in the Castle Photo Archive (British Castles) at Berkhamsted Castle. This picture shows the motte, towards the top of the picture and the bailey in the centre.
