1. that really varies alot, from 1 to 6 or even more meters
2.years! some were never finished
3.hills, mountains, strategically nice places
4.what we would call millions, billions!
5.for protection and to show might and wealth
6.the castle walls didn't give enough protection against cannons and such, also, europe stbilized, castles were no longer needed.

Hope it helps.

Some specifications:

1) Not every wall in a castle had to be 1 Meter thick. To build a wall out of stone was not cheap and took much more time then building a wooden pallisade or house. Remarkeably strong walls can usually be found in the fundaments of the main tower (sometimes leaving almost no space inside) and the surrounding wall, especially on that side that was most easy to attack.
2) If it was a military fortification of a limited use (for instance if built during a siege in front of another castle) and if a strong army was at hand to help, a castle could be built very quickly. But this was not common. To build only a strong tower could take up to three or five years, especially in those areas were work had to be interrupted during the winter.

I don't really know if this will be of any help, but here we go. Yes, castles, like Fox said, were built on strategic places. Castles builders would want as many advantages as possible.
People stopped building castles because they invented gunpowder to break down walls, and that people stopped warring with each other.
I hope that's helps!!!

Who cares anyway, when we all understand what it's about, spelling doesn't need to be good.
O, and don't apologise, cause then you have to spell that nasty word too

Some more specifications:

3) The sites for castles haven't always been strategicaly important places. Very often the castle just had to look good and important on the site, but was worthless for any military action.
5) Most of the early medieval castles were temporary used residences of kings or their mightiest noblemen. In Europe, not seldom the remains of old roman fortresses were again fortified and used in that sense, because they were traditionaly polical and economical centres in the landscape, and most of them stood on important points near a crossroad or a river. In the frankish kingdoms, until the early 10th century, nobody had the right to build a castle without the explicit permission of the king.

When we start that anyway, I'm a 13 year old dutch male, living in Appingedam (try to find out where that is)
I play Games Workshops Warhammer Fantasy (wood elves)
I like to chat, and have fun
I don't like schoolwork
I love castles (the 12-13th century in particular)

Erm, I play Utopia too and loads of other games, I like good books like the lord of the rings...
When I come up with more I'll tell you.

Mostly natural stone, don't kow how you call it in english...
the bricks came later on...
About the building time, could be dozens of years, but emergency castles could rise far sooner, maybe even in only a few months!

Since this thread has changed direction with regards to its subject, may I suggest we drop down to The Solar, where we would all be more comfortable.

I can't rest when thinking about School Projects, but a reclining seat at the fireside is where I'd rather be ! (well, maybe not on a hot day like today. Perhaps I should be relaxing on the battlements with an ice-cold drink).

duncan, now and again asked for details on "us guys" in http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum20/HTML/000035.html
Not wanting to post anything on this site, I sent him a short e-mail saying who I was, what I do and what I'm interested in (castles). Mr [i]now and again[/i} cannot deny he asked about us, albeit not under this thread. If he is unhappy about this, he should say so under the correct posting.

However, given the circumstances, I apologise for answering his question.
