Hello, I want to do a project about the onset of the gun age, and the affect it had on both the construction of castles and the sieges performed to defeat them. The method of presentation I am considering is a short story, with one half devoted to Medievel style sieges, and the other half to Gun Age sieges. Unfortunately, I have yet to find the information required on-line to fully cover this comprehensive subject. I'm willing to go to the library to find source, as long as it is an excellent one, so if a book comes to mind that strikes you as perfect for me, don't hesitate in making note of it. A web address would be preferred however. I'm especially looking for a source that can provide a detailed account of a siege, of any time period, to be used as source information for my story. I'd just like to thank anyone ahead of time who answers this call for help. You must really have a love for castles to be willing to go out of your way to help others in reaching an understanding about them. |

My first advice is to go to the library. You are much more likely to find the information there than on the web. If nothing else you can find references in castle books to sources of seige descriptions. I haven't read a very detailed description yet, but I'll see if I can come up with a reference. The main difference in the seiges you mention is that cannons came to replace seige engines such as trebuches, as they were more efficient and became much more powerful. The Ottomans were well known for their use of heavy cannon. The Ottoman seige of Constantinople is a good place to get the info you seek on cannon seiges. Erik |

For sieges, people probably would use a cannon. One shot will take a lot of wall, I can tell you that... The rifle eventually replaced the croosbow. People seeing how powerful gunpowder was started to use it all the time. The nobles, kings, etc. realized something: What's the point of building a castle when it gets destroyed faster than the time it takes to build the castle itself. Hope this helps! toughguy12 |
