For attacking the attacker usually tried various tricks to get the people in the castl;e to surrender, like poisoning the water, surrounding the castle so that nobody could go in or out, knowint that the food supplies in the castle were going to disappear once
When all his tricks didn't work he would attack, he could use siege engines like catapult to throw rocks against the wall, attempting to breach it, he could drain the ditch and attack with a siege tower, like a tower made of wood oln wheels, they would push that to the castle walls, a drawbridge would go down on the walls from the towers so that the attackers could enter the castle.

Another tactic was to dig under the walls, like a mine shaft supported with timber frames, then light those frames, the tunnel would collapse under the tower/wall, and therefore the tower/wall would collapse.

The bloodiest tactic by far was to storm the castle walls with ladders and ropes, and driving a battering ram to the gate, hoping to smash a hole in it.

The Defenders could use boiling oil, rocks, arrow and such to throw over and shoot at the besiegers, boiling oil in your shirt would be very unpleasant indeed...

To prevent the enemy from digging tunnels castles could have a ditch filled with water, the enemy also had to fill it up to drive their siege engines to the castle, and to be able to storm the walls.

As you see, attacking a castle was very hard.

If I forgot something or said something wrong, please correct me.

Grtz.
