How important were castles in Edward I's subjugation of Wales?

Please can someone email me a decent answer.

We don't normally do e-mail replies in order that everyone can share the information provided, expand on it and discuss it to provide you with better responses.
Vital is the straight-forward answer to your question. As military installations where a relatively small garrison could withstand attack from larger forces, and subdue the local population from, the castles were an essential part of his strategy. They also acted as symbols of the power and resources behind the occupiers, and of the judicial system they represented.
