![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Does anybody know why there are so many castles on the border between England and Wales? Thank you! |

![]() ![]() Quite simply because they were different countries, and one tried to invade the other. Castles are defensive structures which gave protection against attack to those who lived in them, and so made invasion and domination more difficult. In fact once England had conquered Wales, they built a large number of castles to dominate and administer the country. A relatively small garrison could sit safely within the walls, and control large areas of the country side around. If you were in an invading army, beseiging a castle could allow time for the defense to draw reinforcements together. Also if you went on past the castle and left it's garrison intact, then the garrison could attack your supply lines, and make life very difficult for you. Castles slowed down invasions, and made them less likely to succedd. If they sat on the border and you left them intact, then you were leaving a garrison behind you which was capable of attacking your own country very quickly .
