This is because after the Roman Empire fell, people needed security. In those times, the best security was to build a fortress (castle)------------------ A Knight ther was, and that a worthy man, That fro the tyme that he first bigan, To ryden out, he loved chivalrye, Trouthe and honour, fredom and curteisye. --- The Canterbury Tales

You're right to a point toughguy, except that the fortifications of the dark ages were not castles. The castle developed in connection with feudal society, between about the 10th and the 15th century, and was the home of the local lord or the king, although they may have been garrisoned by paid soldiers only during his absence. The castle was the centre of local administration and power. It was the base for controlling the surrounding country, for collecting taxes, levies and tolls. By law or convenience, the castle was often made the place for commerce, milling grain, storage of food and conducting festivals, and was therefore very central to the everyday life of the local inhabitants. |
