Stone castles were built by stacking large stone blocks row upon row seperated by a layer of morter, the number of blocks needed was immense, and often a castle would be built near a quarry for conveiniance, by the standards of the time, castles were VERY comfortable, the hearths themselves were a luxury not afforded to many, and the safety of having 8-20 foot thick walls protecting you was exclusive to the rich, or the military.

Uncomfy? Ah, but you're comparing to modern day living. When castles were built, they were much more luxurious than the places other folks lived in. Normal houses were much less comfortable. Few had proper chimneys, so were filled with smoke from a fire. Many castles had dedicated toilets and washing places - this most certainly wasn't enjoyed by normal people.
