Groin vaulting is created where two simple(barrel) vaults intersect. They are seen in churches where windows are placed high up along the walls of a vaulted room, as well as many other uses in post romanesque structures.
Prior to the invention of the groin vaulting, such spaces often had a domed ceiling with low arches at the 4 sides(The arches being much lower then the top of the dome). The groin vault allowed the arches to be raised, the top of the arches along the 4 sides then being the same height as the centre where they intersect.

The third picture in the second link which Duncan put up is called ribbed vaulting, which is simply groin vaulting with 'ribs' of stone added, for looks and strength.

Thanks Erik for filling in my last post, in taking care of my business I was called away and couldn't finish it.
One little detail about #3 image, the builders used several unusual types of vaults in this church, this being one of them.
