hahahahaha!....we need to build castle projects for our benefit...to help us have a better understanding of the medieval times and the every day life of the castle people....so when we build them we can have a sense of what their living situation was like,....get it? ....hehehehe...

Castles are essentially fortified residences of the local Lord, where he administered his estate or area of influence. This is where he held court, lived with his family when he wasn't at another of his castes, collected taxes etc.
Castles with these original functions are no longer built, so your question should have been in the past tense. You need to read more. Use the search facility and look for feudal.
Castles had to be defendable because if you were in such a position of power, you had to provide refuge for your subjects and yourself from raiders....possession was more than 9/10ths of the law in medieval times.
If you had something worth keeping, then you often had to fight to keep it.

I've read that castles were built not only as a home for a Lord and his family, but as a way to intimadate the villagers, as a show of power and wealth, as a way to look over newly conquered territory.... among other things. Actually castles had many uses besides those I mentioned before. Some held small towns inside the castle walls in which people lived, protected by the curtain walls and the other defenses that made castles so safe...
