Can someone please give me a description of what 15th century castles were like? Also could you tell me the strengths and weaknesses of 15th century castles? Also does anyone know why castles changed form the concentric style to the later style for example at Raglan Castle? I have tried looking all across the internet but i can't find much information about this. I would be so grateful for some help. Thanx |

Hello Nick, to answer your questions would take an essay, all I can do is point you in the direction of the book by Marc Morris entitled "Castle" In his book Marc covers the decline of castles and also has a section in reference to Raglan castle and the siege during the English civil war explaining why castles were not the almost impenetrable building that they were in the earlier middle ages. The advent of cannon and mortars changed the whole methodology of castle sieges. Regards. Paul of Paul's castle. http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/castles/ |

I think I'm going to take a look at that book. do you have a copy paul? where was it published? I am not sure whether or not I could find it over here. I could probably manage an interlibrary loan but it would take a while to get it. |

Hi bent one, you can get a copy from Amazon for $12.21.Paperback or $22.50 for the hardback edition. I bought the book when it was first published and it is a good read. Marc Morris was born near where I live. Regards, Paul. [This message has been edited by Paul (edited 07-05-2005).] |

Also, you might like to get a copy of "English Castles" by R.Allen-Brown, Chapter 5 covers the subject of the decline of castles in some depth. Regards, Paul of Paul's castle. http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/castles/ [This message has been edited by Paul (edited 07-13-2005).] |
