The Medieval Castles of Ireland by David Sweetman is a superbly illustrated book describing the development of earth and timber castles, Anglo Norman fortresses, hallhouses, tower houses, later medieval stone fortresses, and fortified houses and stronghouses. The work reflects the author's 30 years of active involvement in excavation works on numerous sites, and relates new information gleaned from the most recent digs which upsets a few previously held ideas on the pattern of castle building by the Norman invaders of the 12th century. Amongst the 200 illustrations are superb photographs, floorplans and elevation drawings, and excellent artists impressions of the original appearance of many sites.
