Professor Oman was one of the foremost military historians of his day, and this wonderful old book reflects his enthusiasm for his subject.
Dismissing the 'Sad example' of castellated Victorian architecture, Oman treats us to an illustrated guide of 80 castles in England and Wales, whilst mentioning the local ancient properties, and the lost castles of each shire. With superb explanatory introductory chapters, and detailed histories and descriptions of each of his castles, Oman's book is a classic.
Might be tough getting a copy, and mine was a much appreciated gift from a friend, but it's well worth making an effort to get one.

I have the 1926 copy, found in a second-hand bookshop in Rochester, Kent. Is the 1978 version much different ?

I can't imagine that it is, it has old B&W photos and pencil drawings, though the cover will be different , a colour pic of Bodiam.
There's a short introductory by the publisher giving Oman's credentials and a little background.
Never seen an original, I'm sure you value it.

Can't recall where I picked my copy up from (could have been the Castle Book Shop), I tried for years to find the 1926 one with the map still in the back pocket.
Without a blush I must say that I use a lot of the illo's in Postern because the copy so well. Still to be found at a good price as well.

Mine only set me back £12, although that was about five years ago. I don't think the bookshop owner appreciated its value (and I DO have the map in the back).

I've just ordered the 1978 reprint for 14.50 pounds from Castle Bookshop, who's new catalogue is out today. Mind that might mean I've got the last copy

Apologies for repeating the entry, I'd forgotten about Duncan's entry, though should have realised that he would have mentioned it.

No need to apologise - duncan's previous entry also mentioned other books, so the current discussion may have become confusing if placed there.

The reprint does not have a map section at the back, though there is a map of southern marches and south Wales opposite p126.

Duncan has very kindly copied the maps from the original edition of this book, and I can let you know that the maps in the original are not the same as that mentioned opposite p126.
