I have been given a book entitled "Old England : A Pictorial Museum of Regal, Ecclesiastical, Municipal, Baronial and Popular Antiquities". (see what I mean about the title). This book, printed by James Sangster & Co. has no date in it, and appears to have consisted of two volumes originally. Has anyone heard of this book, and can anyone help in dating it (even approximately would help). Many thanks Andrew------------------ The broken stones, the ruined walls, 'Tis few who know where hist'ry falls.

A quick search of the British Library Public Catalogue Throws up these three records
[1] Old England ... Edited by C. Knight. KNIGHT. Charles. Publisher 2 vol. J. Sangster & Co.: London, (1860?) fol. [2] Old England ... Edited by C. Knight. (Another issue.). Old England, etc. KNIGHT. Charles. Publisher London, (1860?) fol. [3] Old England: a pictorial museum of regal, ecclesiastical, baronial, municipal and popular antiquities. (Edited by Charles Knight.) KNIGHT. Charles. Publisher London: Charles Knight & Co., 1845 (1846). 2 vol.: plates. fol.
So 1845 looks to be the answer.

I bought a facsimile copy in the late 1980's - published as Old England - A Pictorial Museum - by Bracken Books in 1987 (ISBN 1 85170 098 6).Inside the dust cover it says it was published in 1844, whilst in the actual book it says first published by James Sangster & Co. in 1847. ------------------ Andy Knight
