Would anyone be able to give me some answers to the following questions ?How many châteaux are privately owned and simply supported by the family, some tourism, some government funding? How many are privately or corporately owned and supported by financially healthy viticulture? How many have become hotels or boarding houses? How many are currently for sale or for rent? How many are medieval, Renaissance, baroque, or later? How many are clearly of mixed architecture? Where do we find the greatest density of châteaux ? B rgs Mr. Danielse from Norway |

Your questions are impossible to answer with any accuracy, and actually throw up more questions than you ask. If we were to begin trying to answer you, we would firstly have to establish whether by chateaux you are using that term in the common usage of your home country to describe any manner of castles, or whether you are specifically referring to chateaux in the French and central European usage. How many are for sale or rent?? Who knows, this is a constantly changing figure as fluent as any property market. How many are medieval/baroque/ renaisance? How many are privately owned...etc etc. I doubt if anyone has ever actually prepared statistics of the style you seek on all of these questions, and I refer you to the following topic threads which will give you a flavour of why this would be so difficult. http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum12/HTML/000134.html http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum9/HTML/000186.html http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum9/HTML/000116.html http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum12/HTML/000018.html http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum12/HTML/000054.html and so on, use the search link on the main bulletin page and search for 'define', and you'll find a great many similar threads. As to the question of mixed architecture, all I can say is that since a castle or chateau was principally a home occupied over several centuries, the majority would have constantly evolved to meet current needs, with frequent adaptations and re-modelings. Although many superficially would present a conformed appearance, scratch at the history and look at the hideen structure, and you will find that most are a conglomeration of styles. For some indication of sites for rent check out a Johansen's guide, unfortunately their web page is currently offline. Again this only shows those sites which actually advertise with them, there are many other sites which do not, and our awarenes of these is limited by the effectiveness of their advertising. There are many many members in CQ from all over the world, but each would only be able to give you an estimate of numbers for their own countries, since no-one knows all the sites. Try searching through the links at the foot of the page, castle collections and accomodations seem the most relevant. | |
