![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sorry, but there's no simple answer to your question. It already took us weeks of discussion here on CQ to come to the conclusion that there are no exact definitions for terms like 'castle', 'château', 'burg' or 'schloss' that everyone can accept. For the latest and longest discussion see at: Like 'castle' in english, 'château' seems to be a term that is used for medieval fortifications as well as for luxurious residences built in our time. But if the specification 'château fort' is used, this normaly means a medieval structure (like Château Gaillard etc.) and not a château in the style of the famous renaissace-castles of the Loire-Valley (like Chambord etc.). So please let us know if you need information about the different tendencies of castlebuilding in the middleages or if you want to compare french renaissance-châteaux with buildings of the same period in other kingdoms.
