I have received email request via friends in the USA to trace Ancestors. Surname is Pumphrey although they have also heard in the family of the name Pomfrey and it has been handed down through the family that there is/was a castle in Wales bearing the family name. Can you help?

Hi Welsh Rarebit
I'm think i have seen this as an old spelling of Pontefract in West Yorkshire, the castles homepage is at http://www.wakefield.gov.uk/community/museumsarts/pocastle.htm

The name is part of the same group as;
Berry Pomeroy. nr. Torquay, devon.

This is a quadrangular fortified house with an unusual gatehouse, whose towers are polygonal.
Most likely started in the 12th C. And later enlarged. A new (!) tudor mansion sits within ruins of the old site.

The exact spelling of this name is found as far back as the 1670's, and all are centered around Tewksbury.
Pomfrey, whilst also a corruption of the above name is also found quite strongly in its own right in the southern counties, Surrey, Sussex etc.
Another spelling, more like the first appears in Warrington in the early 1800's, and becomes quite strong in the area. Many of the first spelling not found in Tewsbury, can be traced back to that area, were they were no doubt christened.

Pontefract was formerly known as Pomfret not Pomfrey

All times are PT (US)
