Hi Trukr Houghton le Spring is south-west of Sunderland on the A690 road to Durham. The rectory had a tower built without licence in 1483, a pardon was granted by Bishop Dudley. The tower has now vanished, site unknown. Chris------------------ The castle location website www.castleuk.net |

A little about Houghton le Spring history can be found towards the bottom of the page at http://www.thenortheast.fsnet.co.uk/Chester-le-StreetandWashington.htm Unfortunately it doesn't mention the tower or castle. Pictures of various buildings in the town can be found at http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/Public/Editable/Themes/Local-Heritage/listedbuildings/Details/Ho_Wash/houghto.htm Again - no tower or castle, but it gives you an idea of the area. There is a 'Haughton' near Humshaugh in Northumberland ? This is a mixture of tower-house & 19th Cen tury mansion. |

thanks again for the replies: I have a letter in front of me stating that in 1936 Ginavive Houghton was asked to sign off her rights to the castle, she refused, her brother did. At the time she lived in the US. The family names I see are Dodgers,Houghton,Schubert, and possabley Anderson, the name of the place was Houghton Castle, I have another old letter saying to contact The Town Clerk, Houghton Le Spring, Durham, Im trying to find a website. any other sudgestions will sincerely be appreciated |
